What are Drugs?

drugsMost people think of drugs as only the illegal ones like cocaine, heroin, crack, marijuana and methamphetamine. However, drugs can be any foreign substance to the body that alters its functions as a toxin. All drugs are toxic to the body, despite whatever perceived benefit there may be. This includes alcohol, prescription drugs and over the counter medication as well. The effect is determined by things such as the amount and frequency in which it is taken as well as physical make-up of each individual. All drugs are basically poisons and strip the person’s body of vital nutrients that are needed for healthy living and even normal functioning.

People who take drugs of any kind on a routine basis develop a tolerance to those substances, which means more of the drugs are required to achieve the same effect. Eventually dependency sets in and, if not handled, symptoms of addiction and withdrawal begin to be displayed, whether it is an illegal street drug, alcohol, a prescription drug or over the counter drug.
